Grand Theft Auto 2 ( GTA 2 for short) is the second part of the computer game series Grand Theft Auto by the Scottish developer Rockstar North (DMA Design until 2001). It was released in 1999 for Windows , PlayStation , Dreamcast and Game Boy Color . Publisher is the Take-2 - label Rockstar Games . Like the first part, GTA 2 is now also offered by Rockstar Games as a PC version for free download.

Gameplay

The game principle and the presentation correspond to that of the predecessor , but the interactions between the player and the game world have been intensified. Contracts are awarded by several rival gangs in the city. The popularity of a gang has an impact on the quantity and quality of the jobs the player receives from it. If he works successfully for one of the gangs, the respect of one of the other falls, to the point of open hostility in the form of physical attacks. With GTA 2 the possibility was created to save one's game progress in a church against payment of 50,000 dollars.

The three districts (Downtown District, Residential District and Industrial District) in GTA 2 are completely fictional this time, and there are hardly any parallels to the real world in terms of content. The action also takes place in the future. The game world was made livelier relative to the first GTA part; so there are B. Pocket and car thieves, which the player can also get to feel. A new part-time job is driving a taxi.

In contrast to the predecessor, the entire game world (but not the objects within the game world, such as game characters and vehicles) was modeled in 3D. The effects on the graphic display can only be felt in details due to the bird's eye view. The streets are illuminated dynamically by street lamps and the headlights of the vehicles if dawn is selected as the time of day instead of midday in the game options (not possible in the PlayStation version).

Gangs

The gangs (gangs) play an important role in GTA 2 . You first have to build respect in order to be seen by a gang and to get jobs. If you do a task for a gang or kill supporters of an enemy gang, respect increases with one gang, but at the same time decreases with another. There are a total of seven gangs in the game, with only three of them per level.

The Zaibatsu Corporation

They are the largest gang in the game and can be found in all three levels. They are involved in all kinds of illegal machinations. Each district has a different client: Trey Welsh in the Downtown District, Red Valdez in the Residential District and Uno Carb in the Industrial District.

The loonies

The Loonies are made up of a bunch of madmen who took control of the insane asylum. You have a thing for explosions. The missions are therefore mostly funny, crazy and contain explosions with bombs or the like. The client is simply called Elmo.

The yakuza

The yakuza are based on the Japanese mafia of the same name. In the game, they have a penchant for the latest technology and therefore always have the latest weapons and cars. The head of this group is Johnny Zoo.

The SRS Scientists

They are mad scientists who kidnap people and conduct experiments on them. Their assignments are usually thought through down to the smallest detail and they always know about the plans of the other gangs. Dr. LaBrat is in charge here.

The rednecks

Rednecks are fanatical religious or Elvis followers who sometimes marry their relatives. You are moving to a truck fleet and the client is Billy Bob Bean.

The Russian mafia

Your goal is to steal high-tech weapons and automobiles to ship to Russia. They also like to kidnap people for use as organ donors. In addition, they have mastered the “contract killer industry”. Jerkov takes over the management of the Russian mafia.

The Hare Krishna

Another gang that has a real role model, the Hare Krishna . They fight pollution and reject any form of technology. Hence, they like to steal cars and guns to be scrapped in hopes of saving the world. The leader of this organization is called Sunbeam.

Each gang in the game has its own vehicles. If the player steals one of these, his respect for the corresponding gang drops.

vehicles

The vehicles are limited to land vehicles, unlike the predecessor, there are no motorcycles. However, vehicles can be repainted for a corresponding sum of money or the number plates can be changed in order to deceive the police. In addition, the player can equip his vehicle with machine guns, mines, oil syringes and car bombs. Aside from the car bombs and the possibility of repainting, GTA 2 is the only game in the series where something like this is possible.

GTA 2: The Movie

An eight-minute short film was shot for marketing purposes and is freely circulating on the Internet. This film works without dialogue. In contrast to the game, the location is clearly recognizable as New York . Footage from the film was used for menu background images and loading screens.

The main character named Claude Speed (played by Scott Maslen ) first steals a drug-laden black 5-series BMW from the Zaibatsu Corporation and chases the police in a Chevrolet Caprice . He can shake off the pursuers by repainting the car in white. The Zaibatsu meanwhile set a killer ( The Cleaner ) on him. Claude Speed does other jobs for his clients, so he frees a group of people from a truck and raids a nightclub of a rival group. Finally he is shot from behind by the Zaibatsu killer .

GTA Collectors' Edition

With the Collectors' Edition , a collector's box was released for the PlayStation in 2000 , which contains the first two parts of the series as well as the GTA - Add-on London 1969 and a Rockstar Games sticker.
