history

Pre-war period

The club officially bears the name "Billiard Club Grüner Tisch Buer 1931" and, according to the statutes, has postponed the "maintenance and promotion of billiards". Just one year after it was founded, the number of members had doubled. Already in the early years, the club achieved some successes at state and federal level, with Heinz Wienhof's victory in the German championship in the free game in 1937 being one of the most important.

Like other clubs, the GT Buer did not have an easy time with the beginning of the Second World War . It is thanks to the then chairman Busch that the game operations could be continued.

post war period

After the end of the war things picked up again. The club changed its venue and moved the club premises to the "Dröge restaurant". Thanks to Bernhard Wysk's commitment, the number of members of the association grew, which he later used when he was elected district chairman. The top players at the time included Herberhold, Twillmeier (German champion 1953), Schmitz, Galla and König. The multiple German champion Joachim Eiter celebrated his greatest successes in Buer.

Mid 1950s to 1990

In 1954, a generation change was announced, partly due to the sporting successes of Rolf Dröge. Up until this point, it was the younger players who watched the "old hands" play in order to learn. But these " rookies " soon outperformed their role models. Dröge not only developed as a player (successful promotion to 1st class), he also showed leadership qualities. He was called the "soul of the association" and was promoted to 1st chairman. A position that he then held for 30 years. For this achievement he was awarded the "Golden Badge of Honor" by the German Billiard Union (DBU). His comrade and friend Bernhard Wysk could look back on a similarly long term of office (20 years).

In the years to come, Dröge carried out intensive youth development activities, which in 1971 made it necessary to set up a separate youth department. In 1979, during his work as a district director, he brought the “Buerer Wanderpokal” into being. The cup is played according to a default system and the GT Buer has won it several times. His work bore fruit in the form of successful players like his son Dirk Dröge or Andreas Schröter.

Since 1990

The old venue had become too small in 1992, mainly due to the successful youth work. There was a need for a new venue, which was found in 1993 in the neighboring town of Herten- Bertlich ( Coord ) . The official seat of the association is still Gelsenkirchen-Buer to this day. The club now had more space and thus more tables. The number of members doubled again in 1994 and 1995. The main reason was the commitment of Dietmar Mielke, who, like Dröge before him, was awarded the “Golden Badge of Honor” from the DBU.

Between 2000 and 2004 the GT Buer was German youth champion five times in a row. In 2005 and 2006 the runner-up was won. With Marcel Mielke, Kai Brezl, Matthias Meske and Matthias Schwerke, the club had top players who ensured a shower of medals. So far, 29 national and 4 international titles have been won. 13 German titles go to Kai Brezel, who won five team and eight individual championships.

Due to its large number of tables compared to other clubs, the club is also able to host larger tournaments. The clubhouse was the venue for several German championships, three times the German Grand Prix in three cushions and once the German Grand Prix in Billard Artistique . The first international tournament was the Coup van Beem in 2001, a tournament for youth national teams that the club hosted again in 2004. In the same year, the club hosted the European Junior Championships in Cadre 47/2. The highlight, from an international point of view, was the hosting of the European Championships Cadre 47/2 in 2006. In May the GT Buer was chosen as the venue for the first German three-cushion masters .

Since 2018, the final tournament of the German Grand Prix (GGP) has been held in the clubhouse again.
