Gaël Bigirimana (born October 22, 1993 in Bujumbura ) is an English - Burundian football player.

Life

Bigirimana was born in Bujumbura to a Burundian father and a Rwandan mother. The boy came to England as a refugee in 2004 at the age of ten because of political unrest in his country of birth , after having previously lived briefly in Uganda . Before moving to Newcastle, he was an active member of the Mosaic Church in Coventry . There he acted as part of the coaching team of Athletico Mosaic , the football club of the religious community.

Career

After living in England for a year, Bigirimana, who previously only played street football, asked the local Coventry City football club for a trial session. After convincing in the trial training, he played for the youth teams of Coventry City. In the 2011/12 season he was used for the first time in the first team. In the 0-1 home defeat against Leicester City , he was used over the entire season. On March 12, 2012, he was awarded the Championship Apprentice Award, the award for the best newcomer in the league.

After his first professional season, Newcastle United became aware of the now 18-year-old. There he signed a five-year contract. He made his debut on August 23, 2012 for the club from northern England. In the fourth qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League , the midfielder played 90 minutes in the 1-1 away game against Atromitos Athens . He made his debut in the Premier League at the home game against Aston Villa , in which Bigirimana came on for the injured Danny Simpson . The game also ended 1: 1.

He scored his first goal in professional football with a long-range shot to make it 3-0 in the game against Wigan Athletic . Bigirimana is the first Burundian player to score in the Premier League.

National team

Bigirimana is eligible to play for the national teams of Burundi , Rwanda , Uganda and England . In April 2012 it became public that the midfielder favored Rwanda, his mother's homeland. But he did not play a game for the African state, although he appeared in the squad for the qualifying round for the 2013 U-20 African Championship . In October, the native African announced that he had turned down a request from the Burundian Football Association due to the political instability in the country.

On May 28, 2013 he was nominated for the 2013 U-20 World Cup in Turkey . The midfielder made his debut on June 16 in a 3-0 pre-season game against Uruguay. He was preparing a gate.
