Gabriel Monod

Gabriel Monod (born March 7, 1844 in Ingouville , Seine-Maritime department , † April 10, 1912 in Versailles ) was a French historian and medievalist .

Monod was the nephew of Adolphe Monod and had Alsatian ancestors through his mother. He went to school in Le Havre and Paris and studied at the École normal supérieure with a degree in 1865 and then in Göttingen and Berlin with Georg Waitz . After his return in 1868 he taught history at the École pratique des hautes études . In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, he and his cousins ​​organized an ambulance that followed the course of the front. He later wrote memoirs about the war (Allemands et Français, 1871). He then taught again at the École pratique (until 1905) and also at the École Normale Supérieure (from 1880 to 1904). In 1901 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . Since 1907 he was a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and since 1911 of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg .

He dealt with medieval history and published the chronicles of Gregory of Tours , Marius of Avenches and Fredegar here .

In 1875 he founded the Revue historique with Gustave Fagniez .

In 1873 he married Olga Herzen, the daughter of Alexander Herzen .
