Gabriel Tola

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gabriel Tola (* before 1525 in Brescia , Italy , † probably before 1575 in Dresden ) was an Italian-born painter and musician of the Renaissance who worked at the Saxon court in Dresden.

Life

In 1549 Tola and his younger brothers Benedict and Quirin (trumpeter) were sent by the Prince-Bishop of Trento, Cristoforo Madruzzo , from Brescia to Dresden to the Electoral Saxon court under Elector Moritz , where they were supposed to work as musicians but also as painters. He and his brother Benedict had been working here as a painter since 1548 on the sgraffito decorations for the expansion of the residential palace and were the first instrumentalists in the electoral court orchestra . In 1563 they paint a ceiling and a vault in the great castle tower.

What has been preserved is an exchange of letters with the elector after eight years of service at the Dresden court, in which pension claims and commissioned work are dealt with.

Tola married Anna (née Hahn) around 1555. Benedict was married to a Helene (nee de Purgorii), a daughter of Jacobus Bruni de Purgorio and his wife Katharina (nee Durata, † 1580). Agnesia Tola (1551 – approx. 1621), the daughter of Benedict Tola, married the conductor Antonio Scandello (1517–1580).

The year of death of the brothers is not known. Around 1575 none of the brothers appear in the court books.
