Gabriele Baumberg
Gabriele Baumberg , (also Bamberg) married. Batsányi (also Bacsányi) (born March 24, 1766 in Vienna , † July 24, 1839 in Linz ) was an Austrian writer and poet.
Life
Gabriele Baumberg grew up as the daughter of an Austrian civil servant. She received a humanistic education and was fascinated by literature from an early age. Her interest led her to frequent literary circles in Vienna. In 1805 she married the Hungarian writer János Batsányi . After he translated Napoleon's proclamation into Hungarian, he had to flee with her to Paris as a traitor.
After the wars, János Batsányi was extradited to Austria, where he was first imprisoned in Vienna and then in exile in Linz. Gabriele Baumberg accompanied her husband to Vienna and Linz, where she also died in 1839.
She wrote short prose and poetry throughout her life and became more famous during her time. She was considered a German Sappho and was u. a. adored by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . Her poem When Luise burned the letters of her unfaithful lover was set to music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1787 and has since been interpreted many times. Six other poems were set to music by Franz Schubert .
