Gabriella Déry

Gabriella Déry (born October 12, 1933 in Budapest ; † March 10, 2014 there ) was a Hungarian opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Déry was born in 1933 in the Budafok district of Budapest . She came from a musical family. Her grandfather Jenőtől Déri was an opera singer ( tenor ). She studied singing from 1953 to 1958, first privately with Géza László, then at the Béla Bartók Conservatory in Budapest; Erzsébet Hoór-Tempis was her singing teacher there. In 1958 she made her debut at the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest in the role of Elisabeth in the opera Hunyadi László by Ferenc Erkel . Déry initially sang roles for lyrical and lyrical-dramatic coloratura soprano , later switched to the youthful-dramatic and the highly dramatic soprano subject. She was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest throughout her career. There she succeeded Paula Takács in the dramatic soprano subject . For her 40th stage anniversary at the Hungarian National Opera, she sang Gertrude in the Hungarian folk opera Bánk bán by Ferenc Erkel. In 1990 she was made an honorary member for life.

During her career, Déry sang the following roles: the title role in Rodelinda , Donna Anna and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni , Abigaille in Nabucco , Violetta in La traviata , Leonora in Il trovatore , Elisabeth von Valois in Don Carlos , Amelia in Un ballo in maschera , Leonora di Vargas in La forza del destino , Desdemona in Otello , Alice Ford in Falstaff (with György Melis as Falstaff), the title roles in Tosca and Turandot , Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana , Feldmarschallin in Der Rosenkavalier and the title roles in Richard Strauss -Opera Salome and Ariadne on Naxos . She also embodied the title character in the opera Die Königin von Saba by Karl Goldmark . In the Slavic repertoire she sang the Jaroslawna in Prince Igor and the title role in Katja Kabanowa .

Later in her career she also took on a number of character roles, such as Herodias in Salome , Lady Billows in Albert Herring and, most recently, the Empress in Háry János (season 1989/90 at the Budapest State Opera; premiere at the Erkel Theater ).

Déry has made guest appearances at the Bolshoi Theater , the Belgrade National Opera, the Sofia National Opera, the Berlin State Opera , the Leipzig Opera House , in Helsinki and at the Wiesbaden International May Festival .

There are some recordings and radio recordings in which Déry sings some of her essential specialist roles. The Hungarian label Hungaroton released complete recordings of the operas La Traviata , Il Trovatore and Aida (with Déry in the title role) in Hungarian ; the Troubadour was József Simándy her partner as Manrico. In 1960 she sang Erzsébet Hunyadi for Hungaroton in a complete recording of the opera Hunyadi László ; her partners were József Simándy and Olga Szőnyi .

Déry was married to the Hungarian ballet dancer Endre Jeszenszky (1925–2008). She lived for many years in the Orbánhegy district of Budapest.

Awards

Déry has received several awards and honors. In 1967 she was awarded the Hungarian Liszt Prize. In 1971 she became an "Honored Artist" of the Hungarian People's Republic . In 1980 she received the title of "Outstanding Artist of the Hungarian People's Republic" (Magyarország Kiváló Művésze díj). In 1994 she was awarded the Hungarian Order of Merit. In 2005 she was honored with the Kossuth Prize .
