Olga Szőnyi

Olga Szőnyi (born July 2, 1933 in Budapest ; † January 22, 2013 ) was a Hungarian opera singer specializing in mezzo-soprano and soprano .

Life

Szőnyi completed a vocal training at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest. Her teachers there included Jenö Sipos and Pál Varga. She was the winner of the Franz Liszt Singing Competition in Budapest. From 1952 she was a member of the choir of the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest. In 1954 (according to other information: 1957) she made her debut at the Frankfurt Opera House as Princess Eboli in Verdi's opera Don Carlos . Szőnyi was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest throughout her career, where she appeared in roles for mezzo-soprano as well as in the dramatic and highly dramatic soprano section. In 1996 she was made an honorary member for life.

Szőnyi initially sang roles for mezzo-soprano, such as Dorabella in Così fan tutte , later in particular the dramatic roles for mezzo-soprano, including the title role in Carmen , Amneris in Aida , composer in Ariadne auf Naxos , Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier , Venus in Tannhäuser and Brangäne in Tristan and Isolde . Later she also took on some highly dramatic roles in her repertoire, such as Brünnhilde in Der Ring des Nibelungen or Leonore in Fidelio . One of her brilliant roles was the female lead Judith in the opera Duke Bluebeard's Castle . She also sang this role in a record under Antal Doráti , which was released by Philips in 1962 ; her partner was Mihály Székely . She also appeared as Gertrude in the Hungarian folk opera Bánk bán by Ferenc Erkel . She also played the title role in the opera Die Königin von Saba by Karl Goldmark .

From 1962 to 1965 Szőnyi sang regularly at the Cologne Opera . Between 1977 and 1983 she appeared at the Vienna State Opera . There she sang Lady Milford in the opera Kabale und Liebe von Gottfried von Eine (1977), Venus in Tannhäuser (1979/1980), Herodias in Salome (1980/1981) and the overseer in Elektra (1981-1983). In the 1980/81 season, Szőnyi also made guest appearances at the Graz Opera House in the role of Herodias in the Salome opera .

She has also made guest appearances in Boston , Chicago , New York City and Montreal . At the Edinburgh Festival in 1968 she appeared under the musical direction of István Kertész as Örzse in the opera Háry János with the ensemble of the Hungarian State Opera. In 1973 she made a guest appearance with the ensemble of the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest in the role of Judith in Bluebeard's Castle at Opera Scotland in Edinburgh ; her partner was György Melis .

In addition to Szőnyi's singing voice, her acting skills and dramatic credibility were always emphasized on stage.

Szőnyi was a "Honored Artist" of the Hungarian People's Republic .
