Gaby Schäfer

Gabriele Klara Schäfer (born February 28, 1957 in Uchtelfangen , now Illingen (Saar) ) is a German politician ( CDU ).

education and profession

After graduating from a university of applied sciences, Schäfer studied at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences for Social Work in Saarbrücken . In 1979 she graduated as a social worker. She then completed a year of recognition at the State Health Office in Saarbrücken and then worked for the social service of the youth welfare office in the Saar-Palatinate district until 1981 . Until 1985 she worked at the counseling center of the Social Service of Catholic Women in Lebach , then until 1994 at the education, marriage, family and life counseling center of the Trier diocese in Lebach.

Schäfer began her political career in the 1970s when she joined the Junge Union . She has been a member of the CDU since 1977. From 1989 to 2004 she was a member of the Eppelborn municipal council .

She belonged to the state parliament of Saarland in the 11th and 12th legislative periods (1994-2004). In the elections to the 13th state parliament she was also able to achieve a mandate, which she soon resigned when she was appointed State Secretary for Home Affairs, Family, Women and Sport in September 2004; her successor was Nadine Müller . In the district election in 2004 in the Neunkirchen district, she was defeated by the incumbent Rudolf Hinsberger . On September 5, 2007, after a cabinet reshuffle, she moved to the Saarland Ministry for Education, Family, Women and Culture as State Secretary.

After the state elections in 2009, Gaby Schäfer was re-elected to the state parliament, but resigned her mandate when, after the formation of the so-called " Jamaica government" made up of CDU, FDP and Bündnis90 / Die Grünen on November 7, 2009, she became State Secretary in the Ministry for Work, Family, Prevention, Social Affairs and Sport of the Saarland was appointed.

In the early election of the Saarland state parliament after the breakup of the Jamaica coalition, Gaby Schäfer ran again and was re-elected to the state parliament. However, as in the previous elections, she resigned the office of MPs when she was appointed State Secretary (in the Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Women and Family) in the grand coalition of CDU and SPD under Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer. In 2013 she wanted to switch to the social association VdK as managing director and asked for her to be transferred to temporary retirement . However, this was refused.

Gaby Schäfer has been the Saarland's integration officer since 2004 .

On November 3, 2007, she was elected district chairman of the CDU in the Neunkirchen district and was confirmed in this office in 2009 and 2011. In 2012 she made this office available, clearing the way for a generation change. Tobias Hans, member of the state parliament and former deputy chairman of the district association, was then elected as the new CDU district chairman.

On October 23, 2011, Gaby Schäfer ran for the office of mayor in the Saarland community of Eppelborn, her home town, but was defeated by the SPD candidate, Birgit Müller-Closset. 52.3% of the voters voted for Müller-Closset, 47.6% for Gaby Schäfer with a turnout of around 57%.

After 10 years as State Secretary, she withdrew from politics. Instead, she became chairwoman of the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband Rheinland-Pfalz / Saarland in November 2017 .
