The Gairn is a river in the Scottish council area of Aberdeenshire . It rises in the eastern Grampians on the eastern flank of Ben Avon .

First the Gairn flows in a south-easterly direction and after about three kilometers takes on two mountain streams. It follows the Glengairn valley for six kilometers to the northeast and then flows for about 17 km in an easterly direction. Finally, the Gairn gradually turns to the southeast, flows under the A93 at Bridge of Gairn and finally flows into the Dee about 3.5 km northwest of Ballater .

Over its entire course of 32 km, the Gairn overcomes an altitude difference of around 855 m.
