Galeotto Marzio (* around 1427 in Narni ; † 1497 ) was an Italian humanist , historian , doctor and astronomer during the Renaissance .

Life

Marzio studied medicine in Padua and Ferrara , where he made a lifelong friendship with Janus Pannonius . At his invitation he came to Hungary in 1461 and became a supporter of Janus' uncle, Bishop Johann Vitez . He then taught in Padua and Bologna and in 1465 returned to Hungary together with Pannonius, who was returning from an Italian embassy. Here he wrote his medical work "De homine" . Marzio was a teacher at the Universitas Istropolitana in Pressburg and left Hungary around the time of the conspiracy against Matthias Corvinus (1471–1472), whose first librarian and chronicler he was.

In Venice he was arrested by the Inquisition for his work "De incognitis vulgo" , from which he was released in 1478 thanks to the mediation of Lorenzo de 'Medici and Matthias'. Marzio was in a heated argument with Francesco Filelfo and Giorgio Merula . His writings contained new thoughts, particularly on astronomy , an area in which he is sometimes referred to as the forerunner of Nicolaus Copernicus . Among his students in Bologna was the future Bishop Miklós Báthory . The Bibliotheca Corviniana was famous throughout Europe with over 2,500 books.
