Nicolas Auguste Galimard (born March 25, 1813 in Paris , † January 16, 1880 in Montigny-lès-Cormeilles , Département Val-d'Oise ) was a French painter , lithographer and art writer .

Life

Galimard received his first artistic lessons from his uncles, the history painter Nicolas-Auguste Hesse (1795–1869) and his brother, the portrait painter Henri-Joseph Hesse (1781–1849). Later he moved to the studio of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres - also as a student . Through this Galimard made the acquaintance of the sculptor Denis Foyatier (1793–1863), with whom he also studied for some time.

At the age of 18, Galimard made his successful debut at the major exhibition in the Paris Salon in 1831 with two paintings: the holy women at the grave and castle lady of the 16th century . Between 1835 and 1880, works by Galimard could be seen in almost all exhibitions at the Paris Salon. Galimard's Leda was supposed to be exhibited on the occasion of the World Exhibition in Paris in 1855 , but was rejected by the jury because of impropriety. This was of course controversially discussed by the public as well as by official art critics and made the artist known beyond the borders of France. Napoleon III acquired this work and gave it to King Wilhelm I of Württemberg.

In addition to his work as a painter and lithographer, Galimard also worked as an art writer. Under the pseudonym Judex and Dicastès he published articles in magazines such as L'artiste , La Patrie and Revue des Beaux-arts .

Auguste Galimard died on January 16, 1880 in Montigny-lès-Cormeilles eight weeks before his 67th birthday.
