Gallenkamp (Lübbecke)

The high, undeveloped open space of the Gallenkamp allows an undisturbed view of the Lübbecker Land.

The Gallenkamp is a 2.6 hectare park-like open space in the East Westphalian city of Lübbecke . It is located immediately west of the city center in the area of the Lübbeck core city on a slope between 115 and 140 meters above sea level.

An unpaved hiking trail crosses the area in the center, which turns into a path into the forest through Hollensiek in the southwest via the Korffstraße junction . The area consists mainly of meadow, but is interspersed with trees that not only, but above all, accompany the aforementioned hiking trail like an avenue. In the southeast the trapezoidal leisure area borders on the street “Auf dem Gallenkamp”, in the northeast with the “Kreishausstraße”, both exclusive residential areas, in the northwest with building plots of the “Korffstraße” and in the southwest with the forest of the Wiehengebirge . The aforementioned Kreishausstraße is one of the steepest inner-city streets in Lübbeck with a gradient of 17 percent. In the north-eastern extension, beyond Kreishausstraße, lies the park-like, but smaller, honor grove of the city of Lübbecke , on which there are some war memorials.

In historical times, Gallenkamp was the city's gallows hill . With the Lübbeck youth, the area is popular for tobogganing, especially in winter and when there is enough snow. Another usage concept since 2012 sees the Gallenkamp as the wedding meadow for the city of Lübbecke.

The Sonnenwinkel is not directly adjacent, but only 300 meters away in the adjacent mountain forest . The dense wild garlic growth so typical of this nature reserve can be found in the Wiehengebirge forest directly adjacent to the Gallenkamp .

In the extreme southwest, prominently at the highest point, is the "Cross of the German East", a wooden cross around five meters in size.

The name Gallenkamp consists of two word stems: Gallen refers to the word gallows . Kamp, on the other hand, is the Low German word for an area that could be field, meadow, pasture, forest or even bush. The areas with the gallows were therefore also called Galgenacker , Galgenkamp or Gallenkamp.

The listed Villa August Wilhelm Blase is in the street Auf der Gallenkamp No. 25 .
