Gallium (III) iodide is an inorganic chemical compound of gallium from the group of iodides .
Extraction and presentation
Gallium (III) iodide can be obtained by reacting gallium with iodine .
properties
Gallium (III) iodide is a light yellow, hygroscopic and crystalline solid that smokes in the air. Its melt is orange-brown. In the gas state, there is extensive dissociation to form monomers. In the solid state it is present as the dimer Ga 2 I 6 . The compound crystallizes monoclinically in the space group P 2 1 / c (space group no. 14) with the lattice parameters a = 9.584 Å , b = 6.084 Å, c = 11.839 Å and β = 107.78 °. An orthorhombic crystal structure with the space group Cmcm (No. 63) is also known.
