Gallus Brockard OSB (born June 8, 1724 in Bamberg ; † April 30, 1799 ) was a German Benedictine and from 1759 until his death in 1799 abbot of Michelsberg Abbey in Bamberg.

Life

Gallus Brockard was born on June 8, 1724 in Bamberg. He entered the order of the Benedictines, where he made his profession on March 25, 1744 . Brockard, who studied law at the University of Bamberg , was ordained a priest in 1750 and subsequently became vice chancellery director. As such, he was entrusted with handling complex legal matters. Commissioned with the organization of the monastery archive, he found the original of the deed of foundation of Emperor Heinrich II . Until then, this document was considered long lost.

When the then abbot Ludwig Dietz fled from the Prussian troops in 1758 and 1759, he transferred the management of the abbey to Brockard. While still on his deathbed, he recommended Brockard as his successor. This was chosen subsequently on 11 December 1759 for the monastery and as such on March 19, 1760 benediziert . Brockard served as abbot until his death; during his term of office the renovation of the interior of the abbey church and the rebuilding of the administrative courts in Gremsdorf and Rattelsdorf fell . When he died on April 30, 1799 at the age of 74, he left the abbey in great debt.
