The Gallwitz barracks were rebuilt as an artillery barracks from 1936. It was named after General Max von Gallwitz . Construction began in December 1936, the topping-out ceremony took place in July 1938 and on October 1, 1938, the 1st Division of Artillery Regiment 62 with 564 men and 400 horses moved in. The barracks were named "Gallwitz-Kaserne" after the general of the artillery Max von Gallwitz (1852-1937). After Bonn was chosen as the seat of government of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949, the barracks was the seat of the Federal Ministry of Economics . Later, the Western Border Guard moved to the eastern part. In 1961/62 the Gallwitz barracks were expanded to include the so-called ministerial building , in 1972 a 14-story high-rise and in 1985 a seven- and a five-story building. From 2001 to 2003, the high-rise building was extensively refurbished, with a new facade design with a two-story blind facade made of slats and a new forecourt design.

The former Gallwitz barracks is now used by parts of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology , the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the Central Foreign and Specialized Placement Services and is part of the Path of Democracy History Trail .
