Red Portuguese

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roter Portugieser is a white wine variety that is also called Rother Portugieser . Since the subtle red berry variety is usually developed as a white wine , it is one of the white varieties in German-speaking countries . Despite the similar name, according to Pierre Galet, it is not a variant of the Blue Portuguese and is also not related to the also subtle red berry Gray Portuguese . It probably comes from Austria or northwestern Croatia.

The variety is still grown in Slovenia , where it is approved under the name in the quality wines Belokranjec and Cviček . Both designations of origin enjoy the status of a PTP (Priznano Tradicionalno Poimenovanje).

It can also be confusing that one of the synonyms of Blaufränkisch is also Rother Portugieser.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is only hairy like a cobweb. The bronze-colored young leaves are shiny:
  • The medium-sized dark green leaves (see also the article leaf shape ) are three-lobed. The stem bay is open. The sheet is serrated to a point. In comparison to the grape varieties, the teeth are set narrow to medium-wide.
  • The cylindrical grape is medium-sized and less long than the grapes of the Blauer Portugieser, sometimes shouldered and dense. The round berries are small to medium-sized and grayish-pink in color.

The grape variety that sprouts early ripens approx. 15-20 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen rather late within the white grape varieties, so that it can no longer fully mature in relatively cool locations. It is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ).
