Gamay Fréaux

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gamay Fréaux is a red wine variety . It was discovered in 1841 by Antoine Fréaux in the municipality of Couchey in the canton of Gevrey-Chambertin . Separately from Antoine Fréaux, Seguin and Roy also found this mutation in the Gamay de Bouze dye grape . The wines are of poor quality and are mostly only used for blending because of their deep dark color . Due to the high opacity of the red wines, small proportions in the blend are sufficient to improve the color of wines.

The area under vines is constantly decreasing, falling from 1700 hectares in 1958 to less than 100 hectares (as of 1999). The remaining stocks can be found mainly in the Loire wine-growing region as well as in Burgundy and Savoie .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is slightly woolly hairy. The red young leaves are only hairy cobwebs and are very shiny.
  • The thin leaves are either whole or three-lobed and slightly curved. The stem bay is open in a V-shape. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are set closely in comparison to the grape varieties. The leaves turn reddish in autumn.
  • The cylindrical to cone-shaped grape is small and shouldered. The oval berries are medium-sized and blue-black in color. The juice of the berries is reddish in color.

The grape variety that sprouts early ripens about 5 days after the Gutedel and is therefore very early ripening within the red grape varieties, so that it can mature in relatively cool locations. The yield is high. The variety is hardy but it is endangered by late frost due to its early budding.
