Gameover ZeuS

Game Over ZeuS was a peer-to-peer - botnet that both financial and personal data on the infected computer spying and to spread spam and denial of service was used attacks.

Gameover ZeuS, made up of components from the earlier Zeus Trojan , infected 500,000 to 1 million computers worldwide that were using Microsoft Windows as their operating system . The botnet had a decentralized structure and used encrypted communication methods. It was mainly distributed via the Cutwail spam botnet .

According to Brian Krebs , Gameover ZeuS has been controlled by a hacking group from Russia and Ukraine since October 2011 . The botnet is said to have stolen over US $ 100 million .

In November 2013, an expert group convened by the FBI began planning the fight against Gameover ZeuS. In addition to the FBI, Europol and the British National Crime Agency, experts from the Free University of Amsterdam , Saarland University and the companies CrowdStrike, Dell SecureWorks, Symantec , Trend Micro and McAfee were involved in the group . The targeted attack on the botnet took place at the end of May 2014 and ended successfully after two weeks.

The FBI is looking for Russian cybercriminal Yevgeny Bogachev in connection with Gameover ZeuS and the 2014 hacking attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment . The Russian Federation refused to cooperate with the US authorities. According to the NZZ , Bogachev lives "undisturbed and in great luxury on the Russian Black Sea coast".
