Jaumont stone is the name of a type of sandstone from the area around Metz in the French department of Moselle . It originated in the Jurassic Age . The stone from the yellow mountain (French: Jaumont or "Jaune mont") is a historically significant stone in the Lorraine region .

nature

The oolithic sedimentary rock is a calcareous sandstone from the Jurassic Age, the color of which is due to the iron oxide content. The color is light yellow with a slight brown component. The bulk density is 2.6 kg per cubic decimeter with a compressive strength of 5.71 MPa and a porosity of 24.8 percent by volume . These properties made it very popular with stonemasons in the region.

Well-known structures

The history of the quarry goes back to the 2nd century. Kaiser Wilhelm I is said to have valued the "Metzer Sonnenstein", which is called in German. Many buildings in Lorraine and especially in and around Metz use this stone. The most famous buildings that were built with Jaumont stone include:
