The Games Done Quick are two biannual fundraising marathons in which speed runs from various video games are shown. The charity marathons are divided into the Awesome Games Done Quick ( AGDQ ) and the Summer Games Done Quick ( SGDQ ). The events are managed by the two communities SpeedDemosArchive (SDA) and SpeedRunsLive (SRL), both of which are held in the USA . Since 2010, the events have collected donations for several charitable foundations. Including the Prevent Cancer Foundation and Doctors Without Borders . The events will be broadcast live on the streaming site Twitch . Viewers are encouraged to donate with various incentives, including, for example, prizes or the opportunity to have a comment read out loud for the respective speedrunner. The 22 events held so far have raised a total of over 19.3 million US dollars . The European counterpart is the European Speedrunner Assembly .

history

After an initial meeting at MAGFest No. 7, the SDA community decided to start their first donation marathon called Classic Games Done Quick for the eighth MAGFest. The marathon ran from January 1, 2010 to January 4, 2010 and successfully raised over US $ 10,000 in donations for the CARE International organization . In the summer of 2011, SDA began the two largest speedrun events in the world with Summer Games Done Quick in summer and Awesome Games Done Quick in winter. Every year more and more donations were collected in this way. In 2011, AGDQ was over $ 53,000 and in 2012 it was over $ 145,000. The Summer Games Done Quick summer event raised over $ 20,000 in 2011 and over $ 45,000 in 2012 for the Organization for Autism Research . Every now and then other GDQ events are held between the two largest events, such as the 2011 Japan Relief Done Quick , which supported the victims of the Tōhoku earthquake in 2011 . During the AGDQ 2017, over two million US dollars were raised for the first time, one million was raised in less than 24 hours. In January 2020, the AGDQ main event raised over three million US dollars for the first time. The SGDQ summer event broke this mark in June 2019.

format

The different speed runners show their skills by playing through a wide variety of video games as quickly as possible. The games vary between modern titles and old classics. They are presented in front of an audience and broadcast simultaneously on the live stream portal Twitch.tv . Among other things, there is the option for the speedrunner to play through the games in an unusual way, such as with just one hand or blindfolded. As usual for speed runs , there are several categories, such as the category to collect 100% of all items / upgrades / collectibles in the game ( 100% ), or the category to complete the game with as few upgrades as possible ( low% ). As a rule, the respective game is commented on by the respective speedrunner while it is being shown, but other commentators often sit on the couch behind the runner and help with commenting. Donation messages are also read aloud by a host in sections of the game where little is happening .
