γ Apodis ( Gamma Apodis , short γ Aps ) is the second brightest star of the constellation Bird of Paradise in the southern sky . It appears to the naked eye as a relatively faint object with an apparent brightness of 3.86 mag. Preliminary parallax measurements by the Gaia space probe show that γ Apodis is about 150 light years from Earth. The evaluation of the data from the Hipparcos mission resulted in a slightly different value for the distance from the star, which is 156 light years. γ Apodis is a giant star of the spectral class G8, which has already left the main sequence . It is one of the 100 strongest X-ray sources within 50 parsecs of the sun and has a luminosity of 1,607 × 10 30 erg s −1 .
