The Ganale or Ganale Doria ( Amharic ገናሌ Gänale or Genale ; also Ganaalee , Genaalee ) is one of the largest rivers in southeast Ethiopia . It unites with the Dawa to the Jubba on the border with South Somalia .

course

The Ganale unites the two source rivers Ganale Guddo and Ganale Gambello, both of which arise on Mount Gurumba in the east of the region of the southern nations, nationalities and peoples (formerly in the province of Sidamo ), where the Shabelle also begins. Until the reorganization of the administrative structure of Ethiopia in 1991, the river formed the border between the provinces of Sidamo in the south and Bale in the north; today it is mostly in the Oromia region and flows through the Somali region on its last section before the Somali border .

The river has cut deeply into the plateaus, which consist of Precambrian volcanites on the upper reaches and Mesozoic sediment layers further down the river . The canyons are interrupted by several waterfalls, of which the Baratieri and Del Verme Falls are the most important. From the north, numerous tributaries flow from the rainy mountains of Bale into the Genale, including the Ganale Dida, Welmel, Wabi Mana / Mena and finally the Wabi Gestro (Wayb) north of Doolow . According to the Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia, the Ganale has a length of 858 km, of which 480 km are in Ethiopia and 378 km in Somalia (which includes the Jubba).

Naming

The Italian explorer Vittorio Bottego added the addition Doria , which is also written as Dorya or Doriya , in honor of Marchese Giacomo Doria , President of the Reale Società Geografica .

history

From October 1935 to January 1936, Ethiopian troops fought on the banks of the Ganale against the Italian troops under Rodolfo Graziani , who advanced against Negele Boran after their attack on Doolow ("Battle of the Ganale Doria").
