The Juba or Jubba (Somali Jubba [ d͡ʒubːɑ ], Italian Giuba ) is a 1658 km long river whose headwaters arise in the Ethiopian mountains and flow into the Indic on the Somali coast .

course

Bridge over the Juba in Baardheere , Somalia

The source rivers Dawa and Ganale , which come from Ethiopia, unite near Dolo on the Somali border with the Juba. The southwest Somali region of Jubaland , the most water-rich area in the country, lies on its banks . When it rains heavily, the Juba floods, which endanger the villages and fields in the surrounding area. Its largest tributary is the Shabelle ; this tributary, which is mostly dried up in the lower reaches, is even longer than the Juba in rainy years.

Hydrometry

The river regularly dries up in winter and spring. The average monthly flow of the Juba river measured at the hydrological station of Lugh Ganana , a city about 540 kilometers upstream from the mouth (in m³ / s). Calculated using data from a period of 28 years, 1951–1979.

Usage of names

The warring Juba Valley Alliance in Somalia derives its name from the river, as do the two administrative regions Jubbada Dhexe (Central Jubba) and Jubbada Hoose (Lower Jubba) and the 1924–1926 separate Italian colony Oltre Giuba .

Founded in 1998, the Somali airline Jubba Airways and its Kenyan subsidiary are named after the river.
