Gao Kegong

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gao Kegong ( Chinese  高 克恭 , Pinyin Gaō Kègōng ; * 1248 ; † 1310 ) was a Chinese painter of the Yuan Dynasty , who was also active in the field of poetry . He is best known for his landscape painting , the realistic depiction of bamboo and his skills in depicting black and white contrasts.

After Gao Kegong was born in Turkestan to a Han family of Muslim descent, he was trained in Chinese culture in northern China. He was also raised to high-ranking positions at the Chinese court under Kublai Khan and was considered to be one of the bridges between the Mongol rulers and the traditional social classes of China. Towards the end of his life he mainly worked in Hangzhou in southern China.

It is assumed that Gao Kegong's painting style was formative for Korean landscape painting and was adopted by local artists.
