Ronald John Garan, Jr. (born October 30, 1961 in Yonkers , New York ) is a retired American astronaut .
education
Garan received a bachelor's degree in economics from the State University of New York in 1982 . Then he went to the US Air Force . There he became an F-16 pilot and flew combat missions in the Second Gulf War . In 1994 he received a Masters in Aerospace Engineering and in 1996 a Masters in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Florida .
Astronaut activity
Ronald Garan was selected as an astronaut in 2000 and started on May 31, 2008 as a mission specialist with STS-124 to the ISS . The STS-124 mission brought another part of the Japanese Kibō module (Japanese Experiment Module - Pressurized Module; JEM-PM) and the Japanese robotic arm (JEM-RMS) to the ISS. At three EVAs he gained his first 20h 33min experience in field operations, including a. in the third use with a so-called "windshield wiping maneuver" at the end of the ISS robot arm to replace an empty nitrogen tank on the starboard girder of the station.
In October 2009 Garan was nominated for a long stay aboard the ISS. He was on board the ISS as a flight engineer for Expeditions 27 and 28 from April 7 to September 16, 2011.
In 2013 Garan was sent by NASA to the US Development Aid Agency ( USAID ) for a few months , where he was responsible for the application of new technologies - including from space travel - in developing countries. In September 2013 he left NASA to privately work in this and other social areas.

Garan is married and has three children.
