Garcorops jadis is a probably extinct species of spider from the Selenopidae family. The species is known to this day only fromspecimens trappedin Copal , the first of which was found on Sambava Beachon the northeast coast of Madagascar . Due to various morphological characteristics, the species was classified in the four species of the recent genus Garcorops . A second find, described as ? Anyphops cortex , was assigned to this species as a synonym.

features

Garcorops jadis has a body length of 6.5 millimeters, with the prosoma having a length of 3.0 millimeters and a width of 2.8 millimeters. The prosoma and the abdomen ( opisthosoma ) are yellow-brown with some darker spots and a hair that consists of white hair on the prosdoma and dark hair with light tips on the abdomen. The legs are the same color as the body and are marked by faint dark bands.

Especially the structure and the positioning of the eyes led to a classification of the species Garcorops jadis in the genus Garcorops . Compared to the more recent species of the genus, it is particularly similar to the species Garcorops madagascar, which is endemic to Madagascar . Both species have a well-defined dorsal scopula on the cymbium with a long embolus around the palp organ (bulb) on the pedipalps . However, the retrolateral apophysis of the tibia , which is attached to the side on the rear, is more pointed in Garcorops jadis than in Garcorops madagascar .

Taxonomy and systematics

Garcorops jadis is so far only known from a single specimen, the holotype , enclosed in hardened tree resin ( copal ) . It is a fully grown male in very good condition. The clear copal from the resin of Hymenaea verrucosa measures 70 × 20 × 12 millimeters and, in addition to the spider, contains numerous two-winged birds , a cockroach , a mite and another, juvenile, spider. It is currently in the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren , Belgium .

Garcorops jadis was first scientifically described by Jan Bosselaers in March 2004 in the journal Zootaxa . The naming jadis was chosen by Bosselaers as a reference to the white witch Jadis from the children's book The King of Narnia by the Irish writer CS Lewis from 1950. Justified by the excellent quality and preservation of the holotype, which to him appeared as "enclosed in ice, frozen in time forever". In September 2004 the paleo-arachnologist Jörg Wunderlich published a description of the species ? Anyphops cortex , which he could not systematically assign. After a comparison of the two holotypes of ? Anyphops cortex and Garcorops jadis , both species were recognized by David Penney, Hirotsugu Ono and Paul A. Selden as belonging to the genus Garcorops . Since Garcorops jadis was described before ? Anyphops cortex , the latter was referred to as a synonym .

status

On the basis of the only known specimen of the species enclosed in resin, no chronological classification and no statement about the status of the species is possible. It is possible that it is a recently living species that has not yet been discovered and described, but it is also possible that it is an extinct species.
