The Gare du Palais ( IATA train station code XLJ ) is the main train station in the Canadian city of Québec . It is located in the central arrondissement of La Cité-Limoilou , between the old town and the mouth of the Rivière Saint-Charles . It got its name because of its proximity to the former palace of the Intendants of New France .
history
The city did not get a connection to the railway network until 1879 and the first station was a modest building made of red brick. The American architect Harry Edward Prindle was commissioned by the Canadian Pacific Railway to build a new building. He decided in favor of the Châteauesque style, a variant of the Neo-Renaissance popular at the time , which had already been used two decades earlier at Château Frontenac . In 1976 the station was temporarily closed, but reopened nine years later. It has been a listed building since 1992.
architecture
The building is made of granite , limestone and bricks, and the steep roof is clad with copper . The front facade has a 2.5 m station clock and a 7.5 m high and 12 m wide window front with metal frames. The window is divided into seven fields, which are decorated with the coats of arms of seven personalities from the history of the province of Québec . These are the coats of arms of Charles de Montmagny , Alexandre de Prouville de Tracy , Louis de Buade de Frontenac , Jean Talon , Charles de la Boische , Louis-Joseph de Montcalm and James Wolfe .
