Gareth Stedman Jones

Gareth Stedman Jones (born December 17, 1942 ) is a British historian.

Life

Gareth Stedman Jones attended St Paul's School in London and studied history at Lincoln College , Oxford . He received his PhD from Nuffield College , Oxford. He became a fellow at King's College Cambridge , where he was lecturer in 1979 and professor of political science in 1997. Since 2010 he has been Professor of the History of Ideas at Queen Mary University of London .

Stedman Jones was an Associate Editor of New Left Review from 1964 to 1981 . In 1976 he was one of the founders of the History Workshop Journal .

Stedman Jones published English re-translations of Charles Fourier's Theory of the Four Movements and the Communist Manifesto . With Gregory Claeys , he edited the 19th century volume of the Cambridge History of Political Thought in 2011 .

He is a Fellow of the British Academy and a member of the Royal Historical Society .
