Kaunas on Via Baltica (European route 67). The place was only founded in 1809 and received city rights in 1958. It is the seat of a local authority ( apylinkių seniūnija ) in the Rajongemeinde Kaunas. The city belongs to the bacon belt of Kaunas, which can be recognized by the sprawling housing estates .
