Jonas Boruta SJ (born October 11, 1944 in Garliava , Lithuanian SSR ) is a Lithuanian religious and emeritus Roman Catholic bishop of Telšiai .

Life

Jonas Boruta intended in 1962 to enter the seminary of Kaunas , which was prevented by the Soviet occupying power. He therefore initially studied physics and mathematics at Vilnius University . After graduating in 1970, he worked at the Institute of Physics of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences . At the same time he studied theology in the Lithuanian underground seminar from 1975. In 1981 he joined the religious order of the Society of Jesus , which was illegal under the laws of the Soviet occupying power. He was ordained a priest on August 5, 1982, but was not allowed to exercise his priesthood by order of the Soviets. His doctoral studies in physics and mathematics, which he completed in 1982, were never recognized. He then worked as the editor of the underground magazine Lietuvos Katalikų Bažnyčios kronika ( Chronicle of the Catholic Church in Lithuania ). From 1983 to 1989 Jonas Boruta was one of the main initiators and lecturers of the secret theology study for members of Lithuanian women's orders. At the turn of 1989, Boruta was appointed Provincial of the Jesuits in Lithuania and a member of the catechetical commission in the Archdiocese of Vilnius .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Vulturaria and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Vilnius in 1997 . The Archbishop of Vilnius and later Cardinal Audrys Bačkis donated him episcopal ordination on June 21, 1997; Co - consecrators were Sigitas Tamkevičius SJ, auxiliary bishop in Kaunas, and Juozas Tunaitis , auxiliary bishop in Vilnius. At the same time he was appointed General Secretary of the Bishops' Conference in Lithuania and President of the Catholic Academy of Sciences in Lithuania . In 1998 he received the Order of the Vytis Cross .

On January 5, 2002, he was appointed bishop of Telšiai . Pope Francis accepted his early resignation on September 18, 2017.
