Garnett Brown Jr. (born January 31, 1936 in Memphis , Tennessee ) is an American trombonist and composer .

Life

Garnett Brown studied piano and graduated from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff ; joined later in film dramaturgy and electronic music at UCLA from. He began his musical career in a rhythm and blues record company, in 1962 he played with Chico Hamilton , in 1964 he appeared with George Russell in Sweden. He then taught public schools in New York and took part in the 1968 Berkeley Jazz Festival with the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Big Band ; then he played in the sextet of Herbie Hancock and worked on his albums Man-Child and Sunlight . In 1974 he won the Down Beat Reader's Poll for best trombonist and in 1976 he took part in a live concert by Bobby Bland and BB King ( Together Again… Live ). He also played with The Crusaders ( Street Life , 1979) and was on recordings with Billy Cobham ( Cosswinds , 1974), Lou Donaldson , Roland Kirk , Lionel Hampton , Teddy Edwards , Booker Ervin , Gil Evans ( Blues in Orbit , 1969 ), Dizzy Gillespie , Eddie Harris , Gene Harris , Hubert Laws , Duke Pearson , Horace Silver , McCoy Tyner, and Joe Thomas . In later years, Brown worked as a composer for film and television. In 1989 he directed the film orchestra for the film Harlem Nights . In 1995 he founded the formation BoneSoir with friends George Bohanon , Maurice Spears and Thurman Green . In 1996 he played in the big band of Buddy Collette .
