Gawain Garth Fagan , CD , (* 3. May 1940 in Kingston , Jamaica ) is a Jamaican dancer and choreographer known for his choreography in the Broadway - Musical The Lion King in 1998 including the Tony Award for best choreography received.

Life

As a teenager, Garth Fagan toured Latin America with the Jamaican National Dance under the direction of Ivy Baxter and Rex Nettleford . He later studied dance at various colleges in the USA and was then a dancer and later a choreographer with various Detroit- based dance companies .

In 1970 he became a lecturer at the State University of New York at Brockport and soon after began training untrained urban youth near Rochester . The resulting The Bottom of the Bucket But ... Dance Theater was renamed Bucket Dance Theater in the early 1980s , before it took its current name Garth Fagan Dance .

He developed a disciplined, professional dance ensemble from the young people, which was particularly characterized by his "Fagan style", a mixture of modern dance and jazz dance with further influences from Afro-Caribbean dances and classical ballet . In addition, he was at times choreographer and stage director for other dance companies.

In 1998 he received the Tony Award for best choreography for his choreography in the musical The Lion King . He also received the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Choreography in 1998 and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Theater Choreographer in 2000 .

In 2008 he and his Garth Fagan Dance Ensemble took part in the Movimentos , an important international festival for contemporary dance and culture in Europe that takes place annually in Wolfsburg .
