Gary A. Strobel

Gary A. Strobel (born September 23, 1938 in Massillon (Ohio) ) is an American plant physiologist and biochemist . He achieved international fame through the discovery of a diesel fuel- like mixture produced by the fungus Clonostachys rosea and discussed under the name Mycodiesel as a fuel alternative for the future.

Life

Gary A. Strobel attended Washington High School in his hometown of Massillon , Ohio until 1956 . He then studied botany at Colorado State University and graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science . In 1963 he received his PhD from the University of California in the field of plant physiology .

From 1963 to 1970 Strobel was an assistant professor at Montana State University , since 1970 he has held a regular chair there. In 1975 he was a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota from 1976 to 1977, he worked at the United States Department of Agriculture ( United States Department of Agriculture , USDA abbreviated).

He is married to Suzan Strobel and has 5 children. He is a professed Christian of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons).

Mycodiesel

In 2008 Strobel published his discovery, a production of hydrocarbons in a mixture ratio similar to diesel fuel, which is produced by the fungus Clonostachys rosea under certain conditions (substrate stress ) . So far, Mycodiesel (also Myco-Diesel , English myco-diesel ) is an exclusively experimentally produced biofuel , in the production of which fungi are involved. Industrial production of the fuel does not yet exist. Laboratory tests in 2008 indicated that cellulose produced as waste in food production may be a suitable substrate for the cultivation of the mushrooms and their production.

Eckhard Boles from the Institute for Molecular Biosciences at Frankfurt's Goethe University , who himself works on the production of biofuels from synthetic yeast , considers the production process to be uneconomical due to the oxygen-limited conditions.
