Gary Hartstein (born May 17, 1955 in Staten Island , USA ) is an American doctor, professor of anesthesia and emergency physician at the University Hospital in Liège , Belgium and former chief physician of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship.

After completing his studies at the University of Rochester , Hartstein went to Belgium in the 1970s because there was a lack of training positions in the USA . In 1983 Hartstein returned to New York , the Bronx , specializing in anesthesia at Einstein College of Medicine.

In 1989 Hartstein moved again to Belgium, where he took over the duties of a local medic at races in Spa-Francorchamps (including at the Belgian Grand Prix in Formula 1 ). In 1990 Gary Hartstein was assigned to the Formula 1 Medical Car by Professor Sid Watkins . Watkins and Hartstein were close friends. In January 2004 Watkins stated that he wanted to withdraw from Formula 1. Hartstein became his successor as chief physician of Formula 1. On November 14, 2012 it was announced that the FIA ​​would not extend Hartstein's contract for the 2013 Formula 1 season .
