The Midland gas power plant ( English Midland Cogeneration Venture ) is the most powerful combined cycle power plant in the world. It is in Midland in US -Bundesstaat Michigan .

history

Originally it was supposed to be a nuclear power plant with two pressurized water reactors. The owner Consumers Energy applied for the necessary permit in 1968. However, planning was delayed, so that construction work could not begin until March 1973. The reactors were to be built by Babcock & Wilcox . As a result of the accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant on March 28, 1979, the project ran into difficulties, but was nevertheless continued. It was only in 1984 that the operator decided to abandon the project. By then, the power plant was 85% complete and Consumers Energy had already invested $ 4 billion  , which put the company on the verge of bankruptcy. For this reason, the parent company CMS Energy had to step in and took over the supervision of the project.

In 1986, CMS Energy decided to convert the unfinished structure into a gas power plant. The construction work took another 5 years and cost $ 500 million. The power plant was finally commissioned in 1991.

technology

The power plant has an electrical output of 1,560 MW and thus produces 10% of Michigan’s electricity needs. The waste heat is also used in the form of process steam: the power plant provides 612 t of steam per hour for the chemical industry.
