history

The Counts of Schönborn (until around 1850)

The coat of arms of the Counts of Schönborn became the model for the pub sign

The location of Gaibach on the important roads Prosselsheim - Fahr - Schweinfurt and Gerolzhofen - Donnersdorf - Haßfurt makes it probable that an inn was already there in the High Middle Ages . Since it was probably a "shieldless" restaurant, that is, an inn that was not sanctioned by the authorities, there are no records of the previous houses.

It was not until April 5, 1683 that a catering establishment became tangible in house 39, today's Golden Lion. The Counts of Schönborn , as village lords, issued a license document. On April 18, 1690 host got the Schenk-, thyroid and hospitality awarded. The lion was chosen as the shield, which is already mentioned in this form in the coat of arms of the village lords as the "striding [...] golden lion".

In 1770 an Adam Pfriem is proven as the owner of a riding school in the middle of the village. This is described in more detail in 1772 as house XXXIV (34). It consisted of a house, a bar, barns and stables and was located on the driver street, today's Schönborn street south of the castle. The restaurant remained Schönborn's fiefdom until the end of the Old Kingdom and the dissolution of the medieval legal relationships , and the Counts of Schönborn continued to own the farm after 1803.

In 1818 Konrad Schwab exchanged the inn building, for which the right to brew beer was first proven at that time . In 1860 there was another change of ownership when the brewer Heinrich Schwab and his wife Margarethe, née Behringer, became the new owners. For the first time at this point in time, the registered lords are no longer listed as the owners of the buildings and the property. You will have sold the property in the mid-19th century.

Changing inn owners

On March 14, 1893, Georg Wachter took over the Gasthaus zum Löwen as the new owner, as it was called for short at that time. Georg Wenzel, the previous owner, had previously tried to set up a slaughterhouse on the property of the old inn between 1890 and 1893 , but had to give up because the authorities did not allow this change of use.

In 1902 the house changed hands again. Michael Friedrich built a garden hall and a bowling alley next to the inn . It is to him that an inn monopoly was established in Gaibach . A so-called bakery as competition was closed and only the Golden Lion still existed in the village. However, Friedrich went bankrupt because he played music on a public holiday against the Count's decree. The influence of the counts in the village was considerable even after the privileges were abolished.

Michael Friedrich was also the one who stopped brewing beer in the Golden Lion. From then on, the inn got the beer from the Schrüferbräu in Volkach , later they got high-purity beer from Kaltenhausen , before Tucher Bräu from Nuremberg delivered it to Gaibach. In 1909 the movable brewing machines had already been removed and the former brewery was converted into a wing with guest rooms.

After Michael Friedrich's death, his son Oskar received the inn. His wife Emilie bequeathed it to their children in 1943, so that in 1947 Emilie's daughter Luise ran the business together with her husband Franz Lorey. In 1971 and 1980 the building was rebuilt and the old brewery torn down. In 1988 Herbert and Albin Lorey took over the lion and from 1994 only Albin Lorey ran the inn. The Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments lists the Golden Lion as an architectural monument .

architecture

The main building of the inn is on Schönbornstrasse at the corner of Schweinfurter Strasse opposite the castle. It is two-story, the floors are externally recognizable through a cornice , and ends with an elongated hipped roof . It was built in the 18th century and underwent several changes in the 19th century. The window frames are drilled . The entrance to the inn is centrally located on the north side towards the castle.
