Novelli got to know positions of Concrete Art through Max Bill and initially painted geometrically abstract. As a lecturer and translator, he dealt with the theories of Paul Klee . His conception of signs had a lasting influence on his style. In his artistic work, Novelli assumed points, lines and surfaces, which he concentrated in areas without a central perspective. He condensed objects into simplified signs, which he arranged on the picture ground with texts and inscriptions. He described this approach with the sentence "Painting is drawing with signs". Informal gestural elements can also be found almost throughout his work.
