The Gauliga East Prussia 1939/40 was the seventh season of the Gauliga East Prussia of the German Football Association . For the first time, VfB Königsberg won the championship, which was held in the round-robin tournament, and thus qualified for the German football championship in 1939/40 . In this, Königsberg reached second place in Group 1a against Union Oberschöneweide and VfL Stettin , which was not enough to advance.
This year's Gauliga was strongly marked by the beginning of the Second World War . The military sports clubs local WSV Yorck Boyen Insterburg , local SV Hindenburg Allenstein and WSV von der Goltz Tilsit no longer took part in the gaume championship. The same applied to the police SV Danzig . The Sportvgg. Masovia Lyck withdrew for financial reasons, Gedania Danzig was forcibly dissolved. The remaining clubs from Allenstein and Elbing formed war game communities . With the beginning of the war, the championship rounds were initially suspended; city championships were held to bridge the gap. On November 26, 1939, gaming operations began.
Due to persistent frost and scheduling difficulties, the hosting of the Gaume Championship was limited to the clubs VfB Königsberg , SC Preußen Danzig , BuEV Danzig and SV Prussia-Samland Königsberg from April 1940 , the games that had taken place between these teams remained valid.
In the coming season, the clubs from Danzig and Elbing moved to the newly created Gauliga Danzig-West Prussia .
