Gawriil Konstantinowitsch Aiwasowski ( Russian Гавриил Константинович Айвазовский ; born May 22, 1812 in Feodosia , Crimea , †  April 20, 1879 in Tbilisi , Georgia ) was a Russian orientalist of Armenian descent.

Life

Aivazovsky came from an Armenian family. The painter Iwan Konstantinowitsch Aivazovsky was his brother.

Aivazovsky studied in the monastery of the Mechitarists at St. Lazarus near Venice and became a teacher of oriental languages, philosophy and theology there after completing his studies. In 1848 Aivazovsky was promoted to study director of the Armenian monastery in Paris and as such he founded the Armenian branch monastery in Grenelle near Paris around 1850 .

Paschal Aucher found Aivazovsky to be one of his most capable collaborators on his great Armenian dictionary. Aivazovsky was also the editor of the Armenian-language scientific journal Basmaweb ( Armenian Բազմավէպ ; German " Polyhistor ") and the Armenian-French review La colombe du Massis (Մասյաց աղավնի) for a few years.
