Julián Gayarre (born January 9, 1844 in Roncal , Navarra , † January 2, 1890 ) was a Spanish opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Julián Gayarre came from a humble background in the Roncal Valley in Navarre. He began his professional life as a shepherd and later as a blacksmith. He learned singing in Pamplona , and later went to the Conservatory of Madrid . After appearances at Scala in Milan , Bologna , Rome , Saint Petersburg , Moscow and Vienna , he achieved world fame as a tenor. His singing was characterized by extraordinary skills and a wide repertoire.

Gayarre died in 1890 after suffering from severe depression.

In 1902 the theater in Pamplona was inaugurated as the Teatro Gayarre . There is also a Gayarre Museum in Roncal .

His life and work were honored in 1959 in the film Gayarre with the Canarian tenor Alfredo Kraus in the leading role.
