In the 19th century, the three-storey, simple half-timbered building of the Hotel Stadt Hamburg stood here from around 1850 , which was named Hotel du Nord in 1952/53 . In 1909 this structure was demolished for a new building.

The four-storey 15-axis plastered neoclassical house with three gable risalits and the portico with round arches was built as the Hotel Nordischer Hof for the banker Hugo Berger until 1911 . The design comes from the Berlin architect Georg Roensch. In 1912 a hotel company from Schwerin took over the operation, expanded the hotel to include buildings at Ritterstrasse 5 and 7, and added a ballroom to the ensemble.

In 1920 the state government bought the building. In 1925, four training grounds for two rowing clubs were set up in the basement.

In July 1945 the Soviet Military Administration Mecklenburg (SMAD) took over the complex. Colonel-General Ivan I. Fedjuninsky led the administration. The city command was located in the nearby building of the state main archive and the city halls on Marienplatz became the house of the Soviet occupying power.

In 1951 the knight's hall was given a stage and a separate entrance according to plans by Paul Nehls . Until 1990 the administrative offices of the Schwerin district council were also located here .

Since October 1990 it has been used by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Ministry of Finance , which is also located in the neighboring neoclassical building at Schloßstraße 5 . The State Building and Property Administration of the State (BBL MV) and the State Palaces and Gardens Office are also located here.

From the architect Roensch (1861–1923) come u. a. still the Weinhaus Uhle in Schwerin, the Johannisthal town hall in Berlin- Treptow-Köpenick , the Juwel-Palais in Berlin-Mitte and the boathouse of the BRC in Berlin- Wannsee as well as the Hubertushöhe hunting seat near Storkow (Mark) together with Max Jacob .
