The Gebrüder Paetel Verlag was a publishing house owned by the Paetel family of publishers and published by German writers. The publisher became known through the publication of all works by Theodor Storm and the scientific-literary magazine " Deutsche Rundschau ". With the help of the publishing house founded in Berlin in 1870, Storm succeeded in overcoming a deep creative crisis and realizing a new beginning in narrative terms. The exchange of letters between Theodor Storm and his publishers, the brothers Elwin and Hermann Paetel, open up deep insights into Theodor Storm's literary work and are evidence of the genesis and publication history of his books.

history

The publishing house was founded on January 2, 1837 by Alexander Duncker , who was later awarded the title of royal book dealer, and went on January 1, 1870 under the company "A. Dunckers Buchverlag ”became the property of the brothers Elwin Paetel and Hermann Paetel. On June 2, 1871, the company name was changed to "Gebrüder Paetel".

The publishing business has grown steadily over the years through its own publications and through the purchase of individual works from other publishers. Publishing works were purchased from the JG Cotta'sche publishing bookshop in Stuttgart (1870 and 1877); the school bookshop ( Hermann Heiberg ) in Schleswig (1870 and 1871); by Friedrich Kortkampf in Berlin (1871); by Alfred Kröner in Stuttgart (1872); the Schlesinger book and music store ( Robert Lienau Musikverlag ) in Berlin (1872); by R. Wagner in Berlin (1872); by W. Mauke Sons in Hamburg (1873); by Heinrich Schindler in Berlin (1874); by Stilke & van Muyden in Berlin (1876); by Georg Reimer in Berlin (1877); the Nicolaische Verlagsbuchhandlung (R. Stricker) in Berlin (1880); by Fr. Wilhelm Grunow in Leipzig (1883); by EC Brunns Verlag in Münster i. W. (1884) and by Franz Ebhardt in Berlin (1889); the GJ Göschen'sche publishing house in Stuttgart (1898) and by F. Fontane & Co. in Berlin (1901).

On April 1, 1884, Hermann Paetel left the company, which from that point on became the sole property of the Privy Councilor of Commerce, Elwin Paetel, who was assisted by his son Georg Paetel on July 1, 1899 . After the death of his father in 1907, Georg Paetel became the sole owner of the Gebrüder Paetel publishing house in Berlin and since 1931 he was the managing director and partner of the "Dr. Georg Paetel Verlag GmbH ”.

The father of the brothers Friedrich Paetel was an important conchylia collector who also published his collection catalog, which was a standard work for conchylia collectors.
