Jakoruda ( Bulgarian : Якоруда ) is a city in the southwest of Bulgaria . The city is located in the Blagoevgrad Oblast and is the administrative seat of the Jakoruda municipality of the same name . The city is located in the Rhodope Mountains , on the Nestos River , 26 km west of the city of Velingrad . The village of Jakoruda was declared a city on September 9, 1964.
The majority of the population of Yakoruda are Muslim according to their beliefs , with a decreasing proportion of them Orthodox .

During the municipal elections in Bulgaria in 2007, 17 selected officials from the local parliaments were elected, of which 11 are members of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms , three from the Agricultural Union Party and three from another party. The current mayor of Jakoruda is the former engineer Nuredin Kafelow .
history
The village of Jakoruda emerged from a settlement of Thracians . After the Ottoman rule , the village's infrastructure was badly damaged and cut off from the outside world.
The city has given its name to the Jakoruda Glacier on Greenwich Island in Antarctica since 2005 .
