The common sea bream has a laterally flattened and high-backed body and reaches a body length of up to 75 centimeters. The head has a pointed snout with a terminal mouth. The back and the flanks are silvery to salmon-colored, the head a little darker and shimmering bluish. Young fish in particular have darker, often bruises on their backs. The tips of the caudal fin are lighter than the fin color.

The undivided dorsal fin has 11 to 13 hard fin spines and then 9 to 10 soft, the anal fin 3 hard and 7 to 8 soft fin rays. The pelvic fins are on the chest.

The common sea bream lives in the eastern Atlantic from the British Isles to North Africa as well as in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea . It can also be found in the coastal areas of the Cape Verde Islands and the Canary Islands . The fish is found in the North Sea , but is very rare there.

Way of life

The fish live gregariously in the coastal area with water depths of up to 200 meters, especially on sandy bottoms and more rarely over silt, rocks or sea ​​grass meadows . They feed on small fish and invertebrates, mostly small crustaceans.

Common sea bream, like other sea ​​bream , including the red bream ( Pagellus erythrinus ), are so-called proterogynous hermaphrodites. This means that all fish become sexually mature as females and later transform into males. The spawning season is usually in spring.
