The Genesee & Mohawk Valley Railroad (G&MV) is a railroad company in the northwest of the US state New York . Within the group of companies of its owner Genesee Valley Transportation (GVT), G&MV is the operator of routes operated by sister companies Depew, Lancaster and Western Railroad (DLWR) and Mohawk, Adirondack and Northern Railroad (MHWA). G&MW does not operate as a railway company itself and is therefore a non-operating rail carrier .

history

After the GVT subsidiaries DLWR in the Buffalo area and MHWA north of Utica developed favorably, GVT acquired branch lines of the Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail) in Batavia , Utica and Rome in late 1992 in order to offer rail freight transport there. The Genesee & Mohawk Valley Railroad (G&MV) was founded as the infrastructure operator , while the freight transport services in Utica and Rome were taken over by MHWA in 1993 and by DLWR in Batavia.

On December 30, 1992 G&MV acquired the Utica Yard station and the almost 13 km long Rome Industrial Trackage in Rome. From August 6, 1993, MHWA was granted exclusive trackage rights for freight transport on both parts . In addition, the MHWA received trackage rights on the Conrail route between Utica and Rome so that the MHWA can operate its systems in Rome from Utica.

Infrastructure

In Batavia, G&MV has lines with a total length of 9.9 km. This is essentially part of the original route of the Albany – Buffalo main line of the New York Central Railroad (NYC), which was relocated to the southern edge of Batavia between 1951 and 1957. In the urban area and west of the city remained one of four existing tracks to sidings use to. Conrail referred to this infrastructure used today by the DLWR as Lower Town Industrial Trackage . In addition, the DLWR in Batavia also operates a short remainder of the Lehigh Valley Railroad main line to Buffalo , located southeast of the NYC bypass route now operated by CSX Transportation .

In Utica, G&MV owns the Utica Yard freight yard , which is located between Milepost 235.9 and 237.7 parallel to the main Albany – Buffalo line. The systems are used for marshaling used the MHWA and as a transit point for goods. In Rome, west of Utica, the G&MV infrastructure includes the Rome Industrial Trackage , which branches off the Albany – Buffalo route at Milepost 248.2 and runs about 12.8 km (8 miles) in a north-westerly direction. From here the connecting railway branches off to the former Griffiss Air Force Base , which today opens up the industrial park on the former military site.
