The Geneva Günsel ( Ajuga genevensis L.), also called Heide-Günsel , is a species of the mint family (Lamiaceae). In appearance it is very similar to the Creeping Gunsel ( Ajuga reptans ). It differs from it, however, by the deeply notched to three-lobed bracts and the dark blue flower color.

description

The Geneva Günsel is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 30 (to 60) centimeters. It is a multi-stemmed, hairy plant without runners above ground. The stems are square. The basal leaves are in rosettes. They are obovate, short-stalked and their leaf margin is roughly serrated. The sessile stem leaves are similar.

The zygomorphic flowers are in pseudo whorls . They are up to 2 centimeters long and usually dark blue in color, but occasionally there are specimens with pink or white flowers. The flowering period extends from April to June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32.

Taxonomy

The Geneva Günsel was first published in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum . The epithet " genevensis " goes back to Johann Bauhin (1541-1612), who described and illustrated the species in 1651 in Historia Plantarum as Consolida media Genevensis . He had collected and observed the plant near Geneva (Latin: Geneva).

distribution

The Geneva Günsel occurs mainly in Central and Eastern Europe. Its distribution area extends from France and Italy to Turkey and the Caucasus. Regionally, its distribution is very disjoint .

Location

The Geneva Günsel is a species of dry grass and semi-dry grass. In climatically favored regions it can also be found along the edges of forests. He is a raw floor pioneer and often appears in semi-rudder societies on cracks in the earth, embankments or road surfaces. He prefers locations with limestone subsoil. It is a Festuca-Brometea class character and occurs mainly in societies of the Mesobromion association, but also Geranion sanguinei or Convolvulo-Agropyrion.

ecology

The four nuts surrounded by the chalice are each provided with an oil body and are spread out by ants . The species also reproduces vegetatively through root shoots. The hair reduces solar radiation and evaporation.
