Genki Sudō ( Japanese 須藤 元 気 Sudō Genki ; born March 8, 1978 in Kōtō , Tokyo ) is a former Japanese K-1 and MMA fighter, author and musician. As a politician, he has been the senator for the nationwide proportional constituency since 2019 on the list of the Constitutional Democratic Party (KDP), on which he won the eighth and last place sufficient for an election in the 2019 election with 73,787 votes.
He fought his last fight on December 31, 2006. In the interview after this fight he announced that he will no longer fight professionally. He fought mostly in the mixed martial arts organizations K-1, HERO's and Pancrase in Japan and Ultimate Fighting Championship in the USA. He became a crowd puller in Japan mainly because of his elaborate shows before the fight, his dance performances during the fight and his unpredictable but highly technical Jiu-Jitsu fighting style. His trademarks were the jumped in triangle choke and the spinning back fist.
He has been an essayist since 2005. He has also worked as a composer, lyricist, singer and choreographer for the World Order group since 2009 .
Titles and awards
- Japanese junior wrestling champion
- World Champion of the Japanese "UFC-J"
- Winner of the "West Submission Tournament"
- Award as best fighter at "UFC38 Brawl at the Hall"
- Award as the best fighter at "UFC47 It's On!" (To this day he is the only Japanese who has received this award twice)
- Winner of the "Brazilian Jujutsu Copa Pacifica Tournament"
- Winner of the "wadai" award at the "Short short Film Festival"
- Winner of the award for the best newcomer at the "15th Taisho exhibition"
Fighting style
Considering the different fighting styles that Genki Sudo learned and used in the ring, it becomes difficult to describe his style exactly. He used his skills as a kickboxer in the ring as well as his skills from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling. However, if you take into account his MMA statistics (below), the main thing you notice is that he was able to end his fights mainly through leveraging and choking techniques. He got his nickname Trickster in Japan because he was able to win the fight in seemingly hopeless situations and often did so with spectacular movements. An example to be mentioned here is the triangle choke already mentioned above. He jumped out of the clinch at the opponent with both legs, crossed them around the opponent's neck and made him give up.
Ring performance
His dance performances during the fight are criticized by several MMA fans to this day, as they see it as an insult and disrespect for the opponent. Genki Sudo himself says that he needs these movements to get into the rhythm of the fight, although he vehemently denies that he has no respect for his opponents. The fact is that Sudo was one of the few MMA fighters who helped his opponents up after his fight and informed himself about their condition and only enjoyed his victory after positive feedback.
