Gennadi Michailowitsch Manakow ( Russian Геннадий Михайлович Манаков ; born June 1, 1950 in Jefimowka , Chkalov Oblast , RSFSR , USSR ; † September 26, 2019 ) was a Soviet cosmonaut .

Manakov was a test pilot in the Soviet Air Force before being selected as a cosmonaut in 1985.

After serving as a substitute for the Soyuz TM-9 flight in February 1990 , he was nominated as Soyuz TM-10 commander . On August 1, 1990, he and Gennady Strekalow started for the Mir space station to spend over four months there.

After he was again a substitute for the Soyuz TM-15 flight , he took off on January 24, 1993 with Soyuz TM-16 for his second flight. Together with Alexander Poleschchuk , he stayed in space for almost six months this time.

Manakow was also planned for a third space flight, which was planned with Soyuz TM-24 for July 1996, and with Pawel Vladimirovich Vinogradov and the French cosmonaut Claudie Haigneré should take place. First, however, the launch was postponed due to problems with the launcher, then cardiac disorders were found at Manakov, so that he and Vinogradov had to be replaced by their reserve men Valeri Korsun and Alexander Kaleri .

Manakov retired on December 20, 1996.

Gennady Manakov was married and had two children.
