The kingklip ( Genypterus capensis ) is a species of fish from the male bearded family (Ophidiidae). It feeds on smaller fish, squids and crustaceans . The spawning season is from August to October. Young fish live in shallower regions than the adults .

features

Genypterus capensis grows up to 1.80 m long and up to 15 kg. It is colored orange or pink. He wears dark spots on his back. The dorsal fin has about 150 fin rays , the anal fin about 100. Both fins have grown together with the caudal fin to form a continuous fin edge.

It is currently unclear whether Genypterus capensis and the closely related Genypterus blacodes are two different species.

use

Genypterus capensis is a good edible fish and is often caught commercially with pelagic trawls as by-catch in the hake fishery . In 2004, 12,310 tons were landed mainly from South Africa and Namibia. Of Genypterus blacodes , also marketed as Kingklip, 30,446 tons were caught in 2014; the biggest catching nations here are Argentina and New Zealand .

Its flesh is white, firm, boneless and has an unmistakable taste. It can be found as fresh fish on the menu in almost all good restaurants in the South African Cape region . In Europe it is usually offered frozen in stores. In Andalusia , the Kingklip under the name Rosada (de Cabo) is a very widespread offer in gastronomy and is also often found in the markets.
